Earth Abides : A Review
This TV Series Is Based On A Book, And Stars Alexander Ludwig In His Best Role Yet.
Where to begin, um maybe with Björn Lothbrok becomes king of the world. No, that's not quite right. How about “The Road” meets and mingles with “The Brady Bunch.”
Most apocalyptic books, films, and series all tend to focus on the destruction and chaos of the events. That is where Earth Abides differs. The intricate and captivating story that the author has written here, is mostly about the main character Ish, short for Isherwood who is rebuilding after the fact.
You see, the story starts when Ish missed the apocalypse entirely while he was up in the mountains recovering from a pretty bad rattlesnake bite. There was about two weeks where he was bed ridden and fevered. Once he came out of it, nothing was the same.
He builds a life with a dog that saves him, and then he meets a woman that puts the shattered pieces of him back together. For saving him he builds her a paradise in the crumbling ruins of the world they once knew. They gain several allies and a community is slowly built.
Then their peace is threatened, when they find out that not all of the travelers they try to help come with good intentions. One of the outsiders cross a line, and Ish and the community are put to the ultimate test of morals, and the lines they will cross to preserve their way of life.
The TV series is available on MGM+ and is worth the 1 week free preview that it usually costs.
There are very few pieces of cinema and film today that impress me. In fact a vast majority of the things you find on TV today are mindless swill, but this series is not among that pile of rubbish. It's edge of your seat one minute, and laughs the next. Plus it has an aspect of pure anticipation, you are constantly waiting to find out what's coming next.
If you are looking for a good show to binge in a day, this is it. Plus, a little bird with insider knowledge said there may be a second season? Even though the original story concludes in an almost perfect ending, the network is totally whispering about it's success, and the almost unanimously positive reviews, because of them it has a possible future.
The biggest hint, lies in them not denying that another season is coming. It doesn't benefit MGM, or their streaming network MGM+ to lead people in with hopes of something that isn't coming. It sours the brand.
